The Yellow River Essays The Yellow River Essay The Yellow River Essay The Yellow river is the second longest river in China and the sixth longest river in the world. It starts in the Bayan Har Mountains and flows through nine provinces until it ends in the Bohai Sea. The Yellow river is extremely important in Chinese history as it is considered the birthplace of northern Chinese civilization and was an extremely prosperous region China’s early existence. Devastating floods from this river have since changed this river and its region from prosperous to the name â€Å"China’s Sorrow†. Two catastrophic floods have devastated the area around the Yellow River, the first in 1887 and the second in 1931. These floods not only affect the population but also have catastrophic affects on the economy and agriculture of this region.The Yellow river basin and its area is prone to floods due to its geography. The area around the river is very flat and ideal for farming. The river can be broken into three differ ent stages, the upper reaches, middle reaches and lower reaches. The Upper Reaches starts at the rivers source in Bayan Har Mountains and ends at Hekou County in Mongolia. The land in this section consists or pastures, knolls and swamps. There are over 20 gorges in this section which provide power to many hydroelectric plants. At the end of the upper reaches the river flows through the Yinchuan Plain and Hetao Plain. These areas are mostly desert and grasslands and the speed of the river slows dramatically. The Hetai Plain is traditionally an irrigation plain.The Middle reaches is the section between Hekopu County, Inner Mongolia and Zhengzhou in Henan. It is in this section that many tributaries feed into the river and increases its speed by over 40%. Most of the silt in the river is picked up here as there is a lot of erosion from the Loess Plateau. This sediment makes it the most silt laden river in the world, much different from the clear waters found in the uppe r reaches. This sediment is later deposited in the lower reaches of the river elevating the river bed. The middle reaches consists of the longest continuous valleys called Jinshaun Valley and is the second best area for using hydroelectric plants as energy sources. The lower reaches of the Yellow River are from Zhengzhou to the Bohai Sea. This section of the river is lined with levees and the sediment collected from the middle reaches has caused the riverbed to be several meters higher than the surrounding ground. (Sinclair, 1987)The 1887 Yellow River flood is considered to be one of the deadliest natural disasters ever recorded. This flood killed between 900,000 to 2,000,000 people. The land around the Yellow river is very flat and ideal for farming. Farmers were able to keep the rising water in check using dikes but the rising river in conjunction with a few days of heavy rain caused the river to overflow the dikes and flood the area.  The water was able to flood throughout most of northern China due to the low laying plains and covered an estimated 50,000 square miles. An estimated 2 million people were killed in this flood, not only from the actual flood but due to the pandemic that followed as many were homeless and could not receive proper food, care or basic living essentials. (Waterlow, 1993)There was a second devastating flood of the Yellow river in 1931 that lasted from July to November of 1931. There were between 1,000,000 to 4,000,000 estimated deaths for this catastrophic flood as with the flood of 1887 the casualty numbers also include those that died after the flood due to disease and famine. It is this flood that is considered to be the worst flood of all times, over 34,000 square miles were flooded and an additional 8,000 square miles partially flooded. As with the 1887 floods the 1931 flood is due to monsoon rains which caused flooding in the yellow river but also in the tributaries that feed into the river and the levees t hat withheld the water broke. (Waterlow, 1993)The Yellow river is prone to tremendous floods because of its high silt content, as in much of the middle and lower reaches about 60% of the weight of the river is due to silt. This yellow mud then settles and chokes the river causing its banks to overflow. Preventing floods of the yellow river began as early as the third century BC when the river was dredged to encourage water flow (Dodgen, 2001). The Chinese have used levees, some as high as 30 feet, channels and dams to attempt too control the river. Dams are considered the most effective but still become clogged by the silt. (Nova, 1997)The river is also more prone to floods as large ice blocks form in the section of the river that flows through Mongolia. These ice blocks act like natural dams and hold back the water. When the ice blocks melt or are broken the water is then released in a rushing wall of water that creates a flood. The deforestation of the upper reaches mo untains has increased the amount of silt in the river, which in turn will increase the flood heights.The death toll from these floods is so high because of the large population that has settled in a close proximity to the Yellow river. The most densely populated regions of northern china are by the Yellow river and the water from the river is used as a source of irrigation for most of the agriculture and industry in Northern China even to this day. There have been more previous flooding of the Yellow river including one that was human induced in 1938, but the 1931 flood was the last of the natural floods that brought about such large amounts of damage. (Brush and Wolman, 200)The causes of both the 1887 and 1931 floods from the Yellow river are the same, heavy rain.  While there have been many other floods by the yellow river the causes have been varying from the military tearing down the dikes as a military manoeuvre, to ice blocks in the Mongolia regions. These floods did no t reach the horrific lengths that the 1887 and 1931 floods due by massive amounts, described as monsoon like, heavy rains. Due to the formation of the river, very narrow and swift flowing at the beginning to broader and slower, the deluge of water caused a massive increase in moving water and silt uptake and completely over flowed its banks. This is particularly easy to do in the lower reaches since the banks of the river are actually at a higher elevation then the surrounding area.The Chinese government is still taking steps to try and regulate the flow of water in the Yellow river and the deposit of silt. A massive dam has been approved for construction that will hopefully be able to prevent any massive floods. Though the only way to completely prevent any further damage from floods is to move the population away from the flood zones. Unfortunately thins would drastically effect the economy and population as the river encompasses a large portion of northern china that speciali zes in agriculture. Even further cities along the Yellow river are slowly becoming culture hot spots and tourist destinations. (Brush and Wolman, 2007)While it is unfortunate that so much life has been lost due to the overflowing of the river that is a risk that must be taken into consideration when one chooses to live in this region. Man has not yet been able to tame nature and as the Yellow river has displayed, nature can be a fearsome beast. With the current climate changes underway it is most likely that the flooding will decrease as the river will slowly begin to decrease due to temperature increase and a lack of rain. Though with the current advances in science and technology the Chinese people will at least have some advance warning on floods and be able to vacate the dangerous areas decreasing the loss of life, though still suffering economically.

There are many factors which contribute to the degeneration of Macbeth of which three will be discussed. The three points which contribute greatly to Macbeth's degeneration are the prophecy which was told to him by the witches, how Lady Macbeth influenced and manipulated Macbeth's judgment, and finally Macbeth's long time ambition which drove his desire to be king. Macbeth's growing character degenerates from a noble man to violent individual. The prophecies which were told by the witches were one of the factors which contributed to the degeneration of his character. If it had not been for the witches telling him that he was to be Thane of Cawdor, Thane of Glamis, and King of Scotland, Macbeth would still be his ordinary self. As a result of the prophecies, this aroused Macbeth's curiosity of how he could be King of Scotland. As the play progresses, Macbeth slowly relies on the witches prophecies. Shakespeare uses the witches as a remedy for Macbeth's curiosity which corrupts his character. The influence of Macbeth's wife, Lady Macbeth also contributed to his degeneration of character. Lady Macbeth's character in the beginning reveals that she is a lovable person. When Lady Macbeth was ready to kill King Duncan herself, it showed that Lady Macbeth could not murder King Duncan because he reminded her of her father. This proves that Lady Macbeth has a heart deep inside her. Lady Macbeth plays an important role in this play because she provided a scheme which caused Macbeth to assassinate King Duncan. After Macbeth had killed King Duncan, he later regrets on his wrong doing. At the point of this play the audience can note the change in Macbeth's character. Macbeth's first murder was a trying experience for him, however after the first murder, killing seemed to be the only solution to maintain his reign of the people of Scotland. Therefore, it was Lady Macbeth who introduced the concept of murder to Macbeth. Macbeth's ambition also influenced his declining character. However, Macbeth's ambition had not been strong enough to carry the motive to kill King Duncan. Lady Macbeth's influence also comes in to play because if not for Lady Macbeth, his ambition would not have been intensified enough to drive him to obtain and maintain his title of King of Scotland no matter what it took, even if it meant murdering. Macbeth's ambition influenced the cause of his new character. This new character of Macbeth contained greed, violence, and power hunger. Macbeth shows this when he kills King Duncan. In conclusion, the prophecies given to him by the witches, Lady Macbeth's influence and plan, and his intensified ambition, all contributed greatly to his degeneration of character which resulted to his downfall...death. Therefore Macbeth character displays strong signs of a tragic hero, making him the ideal classic example.

Plastic surgery is a medical field that deals with reshaping some body deformities that may have occurred due to birth defects or accidents. It is also used for other purposes such as treating diseases and beauty purposes. An example of a disease which can be treated through plastic surgery is melanoma. If plastic surgery is carried out for younger looks or beauty purposes, it is referred to as cosmetic surgery. This paper will directly address the issue of cosmetic surgery since it is what has caused plastic surgeries addiction all over the world. Cosmetic surgery addicts are easily identifiable due to the numerous surgeries they undergo each time claiming that they are not happy with their looks. Many victims of cosmetic surgery suffer from a medical condition known as Body Dimorphic Disorder (BDD). This mental disorder has made people imagine that they look different from others and there is a need for surgery so that they can improve their looks. Discussion Cosmetic surgery is a major problem today as a number of people who are addicted to it are doing it repeatedly in order to achieve their imaginary beauty. This practice is becoming frequent and in many instances it is affecting women as they try to change and improve their physical appearances. The problem with such kind of people only exists in their mind because it is hard to view yourself as being ugly from others, it is only a perception. If you view yourself as being ugly from others, the problem will never end even if you undergo so many plastic surgeries. This perception will directly influence the level of your happiness and accepting yourself the way you are. The practices of undergoing plastic surgery repeatedly in order to feel happy and look like the ones you view as more beautiful than yourself is what doctors refer to as BDD. This condition normally affects both male and females under the age of 18 equally (Gorbis, 2003). People suffering from BDD use plastic surgery as a solution to their unending dissatisfaction with their body physical appearance (Gorbis, 2003). Almost all people who suffer from BDD seek solution to cosmetic surgery. As a surgeon, you should be able to discover someone suffering from this medical condition and recommend him/her to a psychologist. Any invention has both positive and negative sides but plastic surgery addiction would cause more harm to the body compared to the benefits associated with it. For instance, it can damage the skin and muscle tissue of an individual permanently. Another well-known harm caused by plastic surgery addiction is the permanent nerve damage. This may result to permanent loss of feeling and sensation in all the affected areas of an individual who have undergone plastic surgery repeatedly. Many individuals who undergo plastic surgery repeatedly to perfect their physical appearances in most cases end up with irreversible damage that make them look awful compared to their original appearances. Plastic surgery addiction cause more harm to the physical appearance of people with BDD instead of enhancing it. People suffering from BDD undergo plastic surgery so that they can attract attention from the public. They later regret when things go wrong. This is an indication that it should be discouraged and people suffering from BDD should be referred to a Psychiatrist or psychologist instead of a surgeon. Plastic surgery is not cost friendly at all. The operation is very expensive and its outcomes are sometimes not worth the price. What the addicted victims fail to understand is that, plastic surgery operation can only result to two things. That is, a great success or a failure. This means that, the more operations you undergo, the higher the risk of failure (Pruitt, 2009). Many individuals who are addicted to plastic surgery are attracted by what they see in the media. They watch successful surgeries of famous celebrities and think that it might as well work on. This is not usually the case and the individuals we watch on the media having successful surgeries sometimes develop problems at a later date. Plastic surgery addiction is very different from drugs and other things addiction in that it fulfills people physiological needs. Therefore, it is normally difficult for individuals who are not satisfied with their physical appearance to stop plastic surgery. This is something they are viewing in the mirror now and then. If they are not satisfied with what they see, they will definitely run to a surgeon so that the body part they feel is not well placed can be rectified. The problem with such an individual is that he/she is likely not to be satisfied with many body parts. Thus, resulting to a series of plastic surgeries so as to be satisfied with his/her physical appearance. In my opinion, I would only recommend plastic surgery to individuals who have a medical problem. I would never encourage cosmetic surgery because it is doing more harm than enhancing appearance of individuals who are undertaking it. Most people who are addicted to cosmetic surgeries perceive themselves in the wrong manner. They normally have their imaginary images on their minds which they think they can turn to after the operation. This normally does not happen and that is why they undergo so many operations before they realize they are destroying their images. Plastic surgery should only be carried out under medical conditions not for pleasure. Pictures are all over the internet showing how plastic surgery addiction has caused a number of celebrities to lose their good looks. Cosmetic surgery is not good at all because it has not worked well for people who have done it. They are suffering from negative impacts of plastic surgery addiction. It should be therefore be discouraged unless under medical conditions. Conclusion Plastic surgery is not bad if it is used for solving a medical condition. However, having a plastic surgery for beauty purposes or look young should be discouraged by all means. It should be discouraged because it might possibly lead to addiction. Physicians as well as public awareness concerning BDD should be increased to control the unnecessary plastic surgeries. Doctors should also try their best to identify troubled patients so that they can direct them to psychologist or psychiatrist who can advise them. There are other treatments other than surgeries which can help people who have problems with their physical appearance. Psychologist and psychiatrists can really assist individuals with plastic surgeries addiction. The only problem to the control of this addiction is that cosmetic and plastic surgery is so accessible and doctors have not provided a regulation on the number of surgeries an individual should undergo in a given period.

Funny in Farsi A Memior of Growing Up Iranian in America by Firoozeh Dumas is all about her life growing up in California after her dad is moved there but is company form Iran. Being born in Iran she had not learned much English so when she moved to the United State she slowly learned and was the translator for her mother a lot of the time. In her younger years she moved around about every two years and eventually she settled in America after her dad retired from the oil refinery in Iran.Since she was light skinned and had dark hair she could pass for an America as long as she did ot speak because of her accent, this abled her in many ways. After living in America for some time Firoozeh realizes that no one can really say her name the right way because the English language does not use the same sounds that are in the Persian language. Also by taking an America name she would no longer have to spend endless amounts of time trying to explain to people how to say her name.Since she look ed like a young American girl with an American name she could pass for someone that had been born and raised there, that is until she had to open her mouth to say something. After people started to think that she was an American they started to say things that she had never known that they had been saying before, about immigrants from her country. Whilst she has changed her name some Americans that had been traveling in Iran had been taken captive and held for a period of time and while the news was going over the story people started to talk about the issue.By having the American name she heard things that the people really thought about the issues with Iran instead of the polite things they would say to stay off of the subject. Kazem, her father, got fired from his Job for being Iranian during this time and found it very difficult to find another Job. Eventually he stopped putting that he was Persian or Iranian all together and became Turkish, Just so that he could find a Job duri ng Just a difficult time. After all of the problems with Iran went away she went to college at the University of California at Berkeley where she met her husband a Frenchman named Francois.Since Francois was not from the Middle East he was not part of all the craziness with Iran, but he could easily pass for an American because of his white skin. Also if he ad never said anything to anyone no one would ever know about his accent, but then again no big event happened in France that would turn the American people against them. Even though Firoozeh saw the darker side of the citizens in the United States, she did not seem to think that the country was anything less than a blessing, and stayed in the United States as an adult.American attitudes and biases toward immigrants different from country to country and from person to person, some think one way and others think the other way. Normally the things that factor into how a person see's another person are how hat person was raised, wha t beliefs they have, and how strongly they feel about the subject. The biggest factor is the way they were raised because if you are in a household where the parents or grandparents talk about a certain race of people in a bad way, it's the same as monkey see monkey do.If a child over hears there father talking about those stupid Persians, then that child is likely to go and repeat it to a friend, teacher, nanny, or another Persian themselves. Mainly the behavior towards immigrants has been learned whilst the child was growing up or even as an adult eople tend to believe things that they hear, and repeat them to other people which then lead to more people thinking the exact same way as the people that has said these things in the first place.Stereotypes about people happen on a day to day bias, someone sees some that has been wearing the same Jacket all winter and of they think that they are poor and probably cannot afford a new coat. When in all truth that person could Just be wear ing their favorite coat or this one may be the warmest of all the coats they own, a person can never tell anything about a person by Just briefly seeing them in the same hings or at the same places.People think that is someone from one country will do something harsh, rash, dangerous, or illegal that all people from that country are going to do it, and that has never been the case. If someone from a small town goes and robs a bank does that mean that everyone in that town is now going to go and rob another bank somewhere else, no it does not. By grouping people together as being all the same that is Just putting them into one group for one reason are they going to be separate into which are more likely to do this and which are more likely to o that, the answer is no.Firoozeh Dumas was born in Iran and then around seven moved to the United States, but she never thought any less of the people her the whole time she stayed and now even as an adult she live in California. Even after all the hardships she faced form moving here not knowing English and having to translate for her mother, going back to Iran and then coming back again. She saw all of the bias and the problems that people have with other countries and immigrants, she grew up in a world where not everyone is accepted for whole they truly are.

Because of the fact that life itself is a game of gaining power over another, these novels depict a deeper analysis of this game. Although the most striking are the ones that deal with equality of males and females, these power struggles occur not only between man and woman but also society and the individual, two close friends or any two people who are related to each other. This presentation of characters and their actions is not simply narrated; rather, the issues of who controls, how he/she controls, and the process of power struggles are explored. The audience generally is able to discern when a power struggle is taking place, because they can see characters unable to go beyond attempting to control, while the others cope with these attempts, like playing cat and mouse. Furthermore, these novels aim to represent the ch aracter that refuses to play the role anticipated by his/her social surrounding and to resist strongly the rules of people which leads someones life to be directed by others. What the model offers is not only an effective framework description, but also the capacity to be flexible and envision alternatives. Hence, this particular model can optimize processes for underwater hotel ventures and its objectives, especially in the long term. II. Integration of the Business Model In terms of integration, the business model is quite efficient. The framework outlines clear practices and activities as well as future objectives and visions. This strengthens the business model, especially considering the fact that the venture is entering into the market for the first time. However, as has been previously cited, the modelâ€â€in effectively integrating componentsâ€â€must provide nodes to depict their relationships and connections. Jaakola, Kiyoki and Tokuda (2008: 154) identified this as the node structure, an element in business models that explain processes such as value creatio n and business transactions. III. Feasibility of the Business Model Elements unique to a business model add to the complexity of how framework should be examined in the context of its feasibility. The most important criteria, however, is economic viability. This should made a crucial precondition, because without it there is no reason for existence, as the project being undertaken cannot be supported by the market. The project, as defined by the business model, should be profitable. What this means is that rewards must either equal or surpass the expectations of diversified investors on a risk-adjusted basis from investments made and resources consumed (Johnson, 2007: 42). Currently, the business model lacks value-added development and thus misses out on the profits available. Another important aspect in a business model is the way it creates value or shared value among business partners. According to Vermeulen and Cotula (2010: 35), there are four criteria that should be used to de termine how a business model shares value: 1. Ownership of business equity shares 2. Ability to take part in decision–making process 3. Commercial risk and other types of risk such as political and reputational risks 4.
